One phone per person

Everyone clocks in and out on their own phone, on the same day. That's device verification — no more clocking out for a colleague who left at eight.

Why this exists

Clocking in for each other is the oldest trick in a restaurant.

Someone slips off early and asks a friend to clock them out at closing. Or one phone gets passed round to punch in three people who aren't here yet. Without device verification there's nothing to tell them apart — you see a time, not the phone it came from.

Nobody can stand at the door all service. This does it for you, quietly.

How it works

Every phone gets its own mark

The first time someone opens DailyBrew on their phone, the app gives that phone a private id and keeps it there. They never see it and never set it up.

Check-in ties to that phone

When they clock in, DailyBrew notes which phone it was — the id, plus a readable name from the browser. That's the phone they have to clock out on.

One phone, one person, one day

If a second person tries to clock in on a phone someone already used today, it's turned away. Clocking out on a different phone from the one they came in on is turned away too.

It's all on the record

Every day carries both phones — in and out — with names like "iPhone 15 Pro, Safari 17". You can see exactly what was used for each punch.

What you get

No clocking out for a friend

A colleague can't close the day for someone who's already gone. The check-out has to come from the phone that checked in. No exceptions.

One phone, one person

A single phone can't punch in three people. Each phone belongs to one person for the day.

Nothing to argue about

Every day shows the phone used to clock in and the phone used to clock out. If anyone disputes it, you have it in front of you.

Nothing for staff to do

No app to install, no code to type, no fingerprint to scan. The phone's id appears on its own in the browser. Staff don't even know it's there.

Setting it up

The easiest of the three — one toggle, and nothing to do on anybody's phone.

1

Open Shop settings

From Today, click "Shop settings" in the menu. You'll find "One phone per person".

2

Turn on One phone per person

Flip "Everyone uses their own phone". On the free plan you'll be asked to move to Espresso first.

3

Save — done

Hit save and it's live. Next time anyone clocks in, their phone is noted and held for the day. Nothing for your staff to do.

What your staff notice

An ordinary day: nothing. They scan the QR code on their own phone and it works like always. The phone gets noted quietly.

Wrong phone at the end: if they try to clock out on someone else's phone, they're told plainly they need the phone they checked in with. No riddles.

Phone already used: if someone tries to clock in on a phone a colleague already used today, it's turned away with a note saying so.

Common questions

What if someone gets a new phone?

It ties per day, not forever. They clock in on the new phone tomorrow and that's their phone for tomorrow. There's nothing to register and nothing to undo.

What if someone clears their browser?

Clearing browser data wipes the phone's id, and a fresh one appears next time they open DailyBrew. If that happens mid-shift, clocking out that day won't match — but in practice nobody clears their browser between lunch and close.

Does it work on a shared tablet at the door?

No, and that's on purpose. It's built for staff on their own phones. On a shared tablet, only the first person of the day gets in. For a shared device, leave this off and use Shop WiFi only or Near the shop only instead.

Can I see which phone someone used?

Yes. Every day shows the phone name for the check-in and the check-out — "iPhone 15 Pro, Safari 17", "Samsung Galaxy S24, Chrome 126" — in the day's detail.

Do staff have to install an app?

No. It all happens in the browser. The phone's id is a value kept on the phone itself, created the first time they open DailyBrew. No install, no permissions, no setup.

Comes with Espresso

One phone per person comes with Espresso ($19.99/month or $199/year) — device verification. Run it with Shop WiFi only and Near the shop only for the full set.
